DATA - Average weekly ordinary time earnings rose 0.9 percent
in the three months to end August, nudging annual growth down a
little to 5.2 pct
- The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) sold a moderate A$307
mln of Aussie dollars in October, the smallest amount since
February.
---------------------------------------------------------------
* The Aussie dollar drifted lower on the U.S. dollar in thin
trading on Thursday, with risk appetite dimmed by a slip in
Japanese shares to four-month lows.
* Dealers also reported talk of Aussie sales from funds that
sold out of their stakes in Australian chain store group Myer earlier this month.
* The Aussie eased to $0.9263, from a $0.9338 high and
$0.9287 seen here late Wednesday. Support was seen around
$0.9235/40.
* Selling by Japanese exporters pulled it down to 82.70 yen,
from an early 83.06, and toward support at 82.50.
* Aussie still supported by gold, which hit fresh records and
was holding firm around $1,142 on Thursday.
* The relatively small amount of Aussie dollars sold by the
RBA in October also suggested the central bank was not actively
trying to resist the currencies' rise, unlike many others around
the globe.
* RBA Assistant Governor Guy Debelle talked more about credit
at a finance seminar, saying he expected business credit to pick
up as confidence returned.
* Australian bond futures recovered losses as Japanese shares
slipped. Three-year bond futures rose 0.070 points to
95.070, and the ten-year contract added 0.065 points to
94.575.
